One of the most important regulations for the construction industry, BS8539 is the Code of Practice for the selection and installation of post-installed anchors in concrete and masonry.
BS8539 was the first British Standard to provide recommendations for the safe selection and fitting of anchors for use in masonry and concrete and practical guidance for designers, manufacturers, specifiers, contractors, installers and testers of anchors. This regulation is also linked to the relevant European regulations, particularly in relation to the selection of products with the correct ETA's for the application.
“Users of this British Standard are advised to consider the desirability of selecting anchors with a European Technical Approval (ETA).”
Designed to ensure that all stakeholders involved in the design, selection and use of anchors fully achieve the required security standard, BS8539 is restricted to the use of anchors inserted into concrete and masonry drilled holes only.
“If anchors are not selected and installed correctly, they might not have the capability to resist loads as intended. The security of the fixture and, in some cases, the structure, might then be compromised, leading to failure with consequential economic loss, injury, or even death.”
BS8539 is aimed at absolutely everyone involved in the use of fixings; everyone from designers and specifiers to manufacturers, suppliers, contractors, testers and installers are obliged to adhere to these rules, regulations and codes and ensure that the work they are undertaking is safe, reliable and effective.
What does it mean for us as testers?
Before testing can begin, the anchors should be installed as per the manufacturer's instructions and in the locations detailed by the contractor or specifier. The results should be recorded in a full and comprehensive manner and relayed to the specifier or contractor.
As one of the UK's leading pull out testing companies, we ensure that every one of our operatives is fully knowledgeable and able to adhere to the BS8539 standards and code of practice through comprehensive tuition and training in compliance with the CFA.
